We all know someone that has the perfect skin: smooth, dewy, even, and almost angelic complexion. And aren’t we all envious? We can tell you that most likely they weren’t born with it. It does take a bit of effort. Taking care of your skin should not have to be a daunting task, nor should it break the bank. There are basic steps you can incorporate into your daily routine that will provide lasting benefits.

  1. Clean your face using your hands with a mild synthetic soap. Avoid traditional and organic soaps as those can be irritating and cause dryness. Pat dry.
  2. Remove eye makeup with a cotton ball and mineral oil.
  3. Begin using a topical retinoid (i.e. tretinoin, Retin-A, tazarotene, Fabior, Tazorac, Renova) in your twenties for more than just acne treatment. Retinoids stimulate collagen production, smooth wrinkles, help prevent hyperpigmentation, speed cell turnover, and reduce actinic keratoses (pre-cancerous). Retinoids are applied at night and can be used on the face and backs of hands. They are generally not well tolerated off the face, as there are fewer oil glands and the skin gets more irritated. Prescription retinoids are 100 times stronger than over the counter retinol.
  4. Apply a broad spectrum sunscreen daily to exposed skin. UVA rays are constant throughout the year and are not blocked by clouds or window glass. UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin, causing damage that may not appear for 10, 20, or 30 years.
