Platelet Rich Plasma Q & A

What is platelet-rich plasma (PRP)?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a substance that is derived from your own blood. The platelets in your blood make it clot when you are injured and cause the area to heal. It’s amazing to see how well skin wounds heal, and it’s all thanks to your platelets.

Platelet-rich plasma is created by isolating the platelets from your blood. PRP can be injected or applied to your skin to promote skin cell regeneration. After a treatment, you’ll enjoy a plump, fresh face with an improved complexion and fewer wrinkles.

What can I expect at my PRP appointment?

Before your injection appointment, you will have an initial consultation with Dr. Brown. During this appointment, he takes your medical history, examines you, and assesses your goals of the PRP treatment.

The injection appointment is simple, involving three main steps. First, Dr. Brown draws a few tablespoons of blood from your arm. He then takes the blood to the lab where the components are separated in a device called a centrifuge. The centrifuge spins quickly, separating your blood into distinct layers. Dr. Brown takes the layer containing a high concentration of platelets and places it into a syringe or microneedling device. Then, it is injected into your face or scalp. The entire process takes 45 minutes to an hour.

You can opt for PRP injections after a laser treatment, during or after microneedling, or even mixed with injectable dermal fillers.

What can platelet-rich plasma do for me?

Platelet-rich plasma has many dermatological uses, and the list is growing. Platelet-rich plasma can:

  • Promote hair growth on your head
  • Reduce wrinkles
  • Tighten your skin
  • Diminish acne scars
  • Diminish other scars
  • Improve your complexion

If you have another need that can be met with platelet-rich plasma enhancing your treatment, Dr. Brown discusses it with you. He can answer any questions that you have about the treatment and resolve your uncertainties.

If you’re balding, wrinkling, or otherwise aging in your appearance, platelet-rich plasma is a miraculous addition to your aesthetic treatment plan. To learn more about how treatments with PRP can benefit you, call or schedule an appointment online at Dilworth Dermatology and Laser today.
